Building teams through fire and shelter
RWE Trading of Swindon looked to the Forest of Avon to provide Team Building, Networking and Self Awareness Development days for their employees.
After a vigorous competitive warm up on the Orienteering Course at Ashton Court Estate, the delegates were led deep into Leigh Woods for a bushcraft session in which they learned how to build fires and shelters and how to create simple utensils from found timber.
The day was devised by the Forest of Avon through discussion with RWE about their needs. During the day, delegates are taken ever further away from their everyday environment and into a completely different space. The activities themselves are designed to change their focus and to encourage them to work together and share new experiences.
Duncan Bonner, Forest of Avon programme Support Officer, devised and delivered the programme. Observing the delegates throughout the day, he says ‘You can see the changes they undergo. Concentration levels increase significantly, they relate differently to each other, and you can tell how much they enjoy the experience.’
Darren Harris, Learning & Development Advisor for RWE pronounced the day ‘A great experience!’ adding that he now ‘knows the team better and gained insight into their strengths and development needs’.
In terms of the rewards for both the delegates and the company, Darren says, ‘the group learned about relying on others when out of the comfort zone, and most importantly, how they cope with problems in unfamiliar territory, how they work within a team and about how they persevere when things get tough’ and ‘by sharing an experience like this together they have strengthened their relationships and learned more about one another.
The Forest of Avon team are currently organising a series of simliar days for IKEA
