Sowing the seeds of change in the Forest of Avon

This week the Forest of Avon celebrates the launch of a 3 year ‘Wood School’ project thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This project will provide new and innovative opportunities for schools and local communities throughout the Forest of Avon to participate in woodland heritage education projects and celebration events in our fabulous local woodlands and green spaces.

Jon Clark, Director of the Forest of Avon says: ‘Wood School provides a unique opportunity for local children and communities to enjoy, learn about and celebrate the heritage of our wonderful local woodlands.’

Nerys Watts, Regional Manager for the Heritage Lottery Fund in the South West said “This is a fantastic project which will allow people to try their hand at something new and unusual. We’re committed to funding projects that every community can take pride in and learn about their local heritage. Our woodlands are as important a part of our heritage as buildings, paintings and museums”

To launch the project, seed gathering events were held on the 5th and 6th October with local schools at Ashton Court and Blaise Castle estates to link in with the BBC Autumn Watch and the Tree Council Seed Gathering Season campaigns. Children learnt how to identify, collect and grow tree seeds. These launch events were run in partnership with the BTCV Forest of Avon Tree Life Centre who will use the seeds collected to grow trees for local woodlands.
