East Wood & Battery Point
This Local Nature Reserve in North Somerset is located in a great position on a carboniferous limestone ridge overlooking the Severn Estuary and provides some great views. East Wood is semi-ancient woodland and you can see the rare Wild Service Tree here. Walk to Battery Point to view the coastline. This area was popular with the Victorians and Edwardians who used to stroll along the paths for fresh sea air, relaxation and the views.
There's a lot of history to the area - the remains of an Iron Age fort can be seen above the path on the north side of the Wood. World War 2 gun emplacements were sited at Battery Point and a military presence has been here as far back as the Civil War when a fort on the site was stormed by parlimentarians.
Access
There are one or two steep or undulating paths on the site but no stiles or gates and paths are generally surfaced with natural stone.
How to get there
The site is on the north side of Portishead and is best accessed from the Marina Lake area of the town.
