Abbots Pool Wood
The name ‘Abbot's Pool' probably dates back to the 12th Century when Abbots from the Abbey of St Augustine in Bristol dammed the stream to create the three fishponds. Abbot's Pool is still popular with fishermen today with Carp, Tench, Perch, Roach and Pike living in the muddy waters.
Abbot's Pool is mixed woodland which includes Oak, Ash, Beech, Sycamore, Small Leaved Lime, Hazel and Hawthorn. Bluebells can be seen in the Wood as well as popular plants at the pond like Yellow Flag Iris, Water Lily and Water Mint. You may see several species of birds such as Green Woodpecker, Heron, Kingfisher or Spotted Flycatcher.
Access
Whether you want to walk, cycle or come by horse, the stone track through the wood leading to the lovely pond and cascades, provides easy access for everyone, even if you bring a pushchair or wheelchair. There is a car park 70 metres from the main entrance to the Wood, off Manor Road. The Pool is 250 metres from the car park. You can rest and admire the scenery on one of the benches in the Wood, or have a snack at one of the picnic tables close to the pool.
Getting There
Abbot's Pool Wood is next to the village of Abbots Leigh, about 3 miles west of Bristol. Several paths lead to the woodland but the easiest route to the pond and cascades is via the track from the car park.
