Weston Woods
Weston Woods at 130 hectares is one of the largest areas of continuous woodlands in the Forest of Avon dominating the northern skyline of Weston-super-Mare. The Reserve, situated along a limestone ridge, was once grassland until its Victorian landowner planted the original coniferous woodland in the 1820s. This timber was cut down to shore up the trenches on the western front in the First World War. The woodland naturally regenerated and recent management has increased natural sunlight into the wood allowing trees to grow and increasing biodiversity.
The Iron Age hillfort at the west end of the woodland can be clearly seen where the defensive ramparts can be clearly seen around its eastern and southern edges. There is a network of paths within Weston Woods and the natural cliff on the northern edge offers fine views over Sand Bay towards Wales.
Access
A wide, level access path measuring about 1.5 miles links the main entrance at Worlebury Hill Road with the Hill fort. There are other wide, stone surfaced trails around the woods, as well as many narrower, unsurfaced paths. Paths away from the top of the ridge generally involve long and sometimes steep inclines.
Getting There
Weston Woods runs along the northern edge of Weston super Mare allowing easy access on foot or by bike. There are a number of entrances including Worlebury Hill Road for the top of the site and Kewstoke Road at the base of the Woods. Car parking is available at Sand Bay (off Beach Rd) or on Worlebury Hill Road.
